NOTES:
Pours a hazy brown-amber with a quickly growing (and overgrowing) off-white head into a snifter.
Nose is piney hops with a tinge of citrus, brown sugar, caramel and vanilla. Quite nice.
Mouthfeel is slick with hop oils, medium bodied with medium to high carbonation, prickly with a dry finish.
Taste is much like the nose, quite hoppy with pine and citrus, and a strong sweet backbone of candy sugar, bringing nice vanilla and brown sugar flavors into the mix. Hops might be a little astringent, slightly overpowering the sweetness, which really wants to shine through.
Drinkability is good, alcohol is well masked and the carbonation and body are very drinkable, though the slightly out-of-balance hop bitterness wears a little thin.
Overall this is a top notch beer. The aroma is delightful, and the Belgian candy sweetness is really, really nice. If the bitterness were a bit more balanced out, this would be amazing. As is, it's still quite good and definitely an interesting and enjoyable joint from Struise and Mikkeller.
